Hayward City Council: Eighteen hopefuls vie for single vacant seat

A total of 18 candidates have filed applications for the remaining two years term on the city council seat vacated with the election of Barbara Halliday as mayor. The remaining five members of the city council and mayor Halliday are meeting Friday, July 18, to screen the list of applicants and decide whom to interview for the vacant seat at its July 22 public meeting.

Each member of the council, including the mayor, will list three applicants they deem should be interviewed on July 22 – those applicants that appear three times or more on the lists will be called for the interview. The council is expected to decide on an appointee during the July 22 meeting. If a decision could not be made, which is unlikely, the vacant seat will be filled during a special election on November 4.

The applicants include  former council member Mark Salinas, Rocky Fernandez, and planning commission members Rodney Loché, Elisa Marquez, and Vishal Trivedi; Cheryl Butler-Adams, Daniel Da Silva, Shaun English, Valerie Evans, Faryal Habib, Austin Intal, Fahim Khan, Charlie Peters, Theresa Reyes, Manny Sawit, Brian Schott, Thuy Tran, and Virginia Williamson.

Fernandez and Loché lost their bid for a seat on the council in the election held last June 3.
